Literacy

This week in literacy we've continued to journal about various topics such as our our 2nd Pillar of Care, We Care for Others and our 3rd Pillar of Care, We Care for our Place.

We've also looked at character descriptions in stories. We read the story "Here Comes Trouble" by Corrine Demas, and examined the main characters of the story.

Math

We've continued to look at patterns in math using a variety of attributes.

Social Studies

We've continued to look at mapping skills. Students created a map of our school playground.

Science

We've been looking at seasonal changes in autumn and what goes on in nature during autumn. We brainstormed what we would expect to see during our walk to confederation park next week.

September 18, 2015

We've had a busy and exciting week in room 2!

Literacy:

This week in literacy we've been journaling using prompts such as: What we like to do on a rainy day, My favorite Stuffie, Ways I Care for Myself and reflecting on our Terry Fox experience this year.

Our emerging readers and writers are making basic connections to how print conveys meaning. They understand that although their writing may not make sense quite yet, it does hold meaning.

Home Reading:

Just a note, Home Reading books go home at the start of the week and come back at the end of the week. These books are kept at home for you to practice and read with your child.

Math:

This week in math we've been learning about what 'cores' of patterns are, pattern attributes and how to translate patterns (i.e. blue, blue, green, red is the same as circle, circle, square, triangle is the same as AABC)

Using coloured bears to create patterns.

Science:

We've continued to discuss seasonal changes and their impact on our lives and world.

We've also completed a task from a Beakerhead challenge! Our challenge this year was Larger than Life using Alumnimn foil.

Our class took that theme and went with: The Sky and Above. Check out some of their work below.

Space Clouds

Our Universe

I had to include a special mention about kindergartens dinosaur creation!

Kindergarten's Dinosaur!

Social Studies:

We've been looking at mapping skills, what purpose maps serve and have looked at how we can make a map of our classroom.

A map of our classroom.

Special Note:

Conferences are on Thursday & Friday. Mrs. Nichols will have sent you an email on how to register for conferences. If you can't make it at any of these times, please contact me and I'd be happy to find a time that works for both of us.

Have a great and safe weekend.

Literacy

This week in literacy we've been exploring literacy centers, completed some writing tasks around things we enjoy doing in autumn and winter seasons (which ties to our science study of seasonal changes).

We've also begun our home reading program this week. Thank you to all the parents who have returned the home reading forms.

Home reading will come home at the start of each week and should be returned at the end of the school week.

Math

This week in math we've been examining patterns. We've been looking at what the core of patterns is, how patterns repeat and the attributes of repeating patterns.

Science

In Science we've begun to look at seasonal changes. We've started talking about the changes we can observe as we approach fall. Students have come up with some great observations such as length of day, temperature, animal and plant changes.

Health & Pillars of Care

Our Pillars of Care is something schools use to talk to our learners about ways we respect ourselves and others. The three pillars of care are:

  • Care for Ourselves
  • Care for Each Other
  • Care for Our Place
These align closely with our Health Curriculum where expectations are:

Wellness Choices:
Students will make responsible and informed choices to maintain health and to promote safety for self and others.

Relationship Choices:
Students will develop effective interpersonal skills that demonstrate responsibility, respect and caring in order to establish and maintain healthy interactions.

Life-Learning Choices:
Students will use resources effectively to manage and explore life roles and career opportunities and challenges.

Welcome! September 4, 2015

Welcome to the 2015-16 School Year!

It's been an exciting start to the school year! I'm glad to see so many faces returning to Rosemont.

It will be a few more weeks until our first formal meeting, but if you would like to come by before or after school - please feel free to pop in. You can always email me or call Mrs. Nichols in the office to set up at time.

This weekend you'll find coming home in backpacks is the School Forms Package. Please fill them out and return them by September 18.

You'll also notice your child's agenda book. This is the primary form of communication between home and school. Please make sure to check it daily, initial the date and take out (or return) any information/sheets from the front pocket of the agenda.

I will start our home reading program on Tuesday for parents who return the home reading forms.

This week we've begun exploring Patterns and Relations in Math! Here is an example of some students working on patterning at a math center.

Have a great and restful long weekend!
