May 29, 2015 - City Hall School Week

What an incredible and amazing week we've had at City Hall School. Our class has been extremely fortunate to participate in this engaging week-long inquiry program. A huge thank you to Jody Danchuck from City Hall School for having faith in taking on a grade 1 class for the first time ever, as well, a huge thank you to all the volunteers that participated with us this week! This week wouldn't have been possible without your help and support.

One thing all our leaners have come away with from this week is to be begin to critically think about the world they interact and live in. They now have the skill-set and toolkit to examine spaces, people and artefacts around them in a critical manner.

We have covered some serious ground, but I'll note some highlights of our week for everyone!

Monday

We arrived and rushed quickly into council chambers to catch Mayor Nenshi's rendition of "Let It Go".... wow! The children were amused and impressed by that performance! We spent the rest of the rest of the morning getting a feel for the Municipal Building and looking around on a small tour.

In the afternoon we had a chance to meet and speak to Councillor Druh Farrell, as well, we examined the atrium of the Municipal Building as a public space, looking at its beauty, comfort, accessibility, landmarks and safety.

Tuesday

We walked up to the Bow Building and examined what sort of space it was. We went with the knowledge that the Bow is a private space, and that access to the building was limited. Student's made great connections on how the art outside the Bow (Wonderland), was a in fact not public art, but publicly-placed private art. Students compared the differences and similarities to the Bow and Municipal Building.

On our way back, we came through Stephen Avenue and we investigated that as a public space and looking at its beauty, comfort, accessibility, landmarks and safety.

Wednesday we evaluated Olympic Plaza as a public space (beauty, comfort, accessibility, landmarks and safety) and went on a shape hunt to look at the 2D and 3D shapes we could find in the plaza. Later in the morning we had a chance to meet with Mayor Nenshi and ask him some questions we had prepared.

Wednesday afternoon we wandered off in our small groups to look at how we use our senses to observe what's going on in public spaces. The group I worked with went back to Stephen Avenue to examine and journal about the smells, sights and sounds. We repeated this to see what might change if we moved 30 metres from the sun to the shade under a +15, giving us the chance to observe some interesting changes.

Thursday

Thursday morning we continued to look at public spaces by examining Confederation Park. Jody came and met us at the school and we walked over to the east side of the park where we met Darrel Klint from Parks Calgary. We went on an informative guided tour to examine citizenship and responsibilities that we share with the city to care for some public spaces, such as Confederation park. The bus met us there to head to City Hall.

Thursday afternoon we spend examining and journalling about the artefacts that the Municipal Building had. Students noted in-depth descriptions and we began to crafts some stories based on these artefacts.

Friday

Friday morning we finished off our stories before heading down Stephen Avenue towards The Core. We stopped along significant pieces of public art for discussions and conversations before heading to Devonian Gardens. After having lunch there, we spend the afternoon looking at how Devonian Gardens as a city park, examining how it's similar and different to other public spaces and parks. We capped our week at the gardens journalling about a public space that we found important and why. On the way back to the Municipal Building we explored some of the +15 systems and talked about how these are private spaces that are open to the public.

Lunch @ Devonian Gardens gave parents who work downtown a chance to share a moment with their kids!

City Hall School News/Social Studies

Jody Danchuck from City Hall School came to visit our class today. She talked to us about what to expect next week, being a good leader, what are interests were and lots of other things.

It's important to dress for the weather while at City Hall School. Remember that we will be doing a lot of walking outdoors. We should have sunscreen, a hat, a sweater (because it gets chilly in the cast of the shadows of the tall buildings) as well as comfortable shoes and a water bottle. Jody mentioned that we should bring extra snacks as we'll be busy moving all day.

You must be here at 9:00 am as we leave the school promptly each morning. We will return around 3:00 pm each day.

We've been working very hard to prepare for City Hall! As a whole group, we created some insightful questions to ask Cllr. Farrell as well as Mayor Nenshi for our meetings with them next week. We're quite excited!

Literacy

This week in literacy we finished off our "Perfectly Disgusting Sandwich" recipes! You can check out the finished product on the display outside our classroom. We also had a chance to put our comprehension skills to the test by following a pancake recipe to create. We had lots of fun making pancakes! Thanks to Mrs. Dewart for helping us with that.

Math

In math this I completed summative 1-to-1 assessments with the grade 2's this week. We explored solving tangram shape puzzles. Here's one you can do at home:

Open Minds - Due Thursday May 21st

Forms for City Hall School went home this week. Please make sure to sign the waiver and the Media Release Consent form (for the City of Calgary). Parent volunteers, a set of blue forms went home with your child. Please fill those out and return them back with your child.

Literacy

This week in literacy we've continued to look at procedural writing. This week, we've looked at recipes! We looked at writing recipes for smoothies, muffins, sandwiches. We had a bit of fun with recipe writing by creating a "Perfectly Disgusting Sandwich".

Math

In math this week, students have continued to explore and sort 3D shapes based on shapes, edges and faces. Student's have had ICT opportunities to explore creating and examining other types of shapes. Grade 1's have had some 1-on-1 time with me for formal assessments in math. Next week we'll continue with shapes while grade 2's have assessments with me.

Social Studies

This week we completed two walks to Confederation Park to explore and assess the park as a public space. Student's had a great time exploring the walk and making great connections to nature (and how natures sights and sounds are beautiful).Thank you to all the volunteers who were able to join us.

Literacy

This week in literacy we've been examining procedural writing. We've written steps in washing our hands, steps in brushing our teeth, and we created a poster with a partner on how to safely cross the road. We'll be continuing on different types of procedural writing next week.

Math

We've continued to examine the properties (faces, edges and vertices) and build 3-D shapes.

Social Studies

We've been preparing for our trip to Confederation Park next Monday and Tuesday. Please make sure that student's are dressed appropriately for the weather and have a litterless snack.

Art

Mrs. McCreary has come in to volunteer to do some legacy artwork with our class. We've begun to paint wooden birds, rabbits and butterflies to leave on the school fence. Mrs. McCreary is looking for volunteers to help affix them to our school fence towards the end of the month and if you'd like to help, please contact Mrs. Nichols in the office.

Misc.

This week we had our Heart and Stroke fundraising kick-off where our student's had a great time demonstrating some great skipping skills.
