Congratulations to all our student's for such a wonderful job they've done on our Let's Create and Opera: The Wilds! Our children have worked very hard to create, produce and perform this Opera and deserve a pat on the back!
This has been an unusual school week filled with tech rehearsals, dress rehearsals and performances. Student's also earned their YES day as well!
Here's what we've covered this week in learning:
Literacy
To wrap up our study of ways we communicate, we looked at the function and use of a postcard. Student's worked hard on creating their own postcard using watercolors with a Rosemont or Opera theme. Have a look at an example.
Math
This week we've been looking at 3-D shapes, specifically the attributes of a cube. Student's had a chance to create a cube out of toothpicks and marshmallows and have started working on a net.
Social Studies
We've continued examining public spaces at our school. This week we reflected on beauty and landmarks in public spaces.
Our week has been an extremely busy week! We've been doing a lot of work around the opera, including rehearsals, costume designs and modifications and practicing for our opera. You're going to love it!
Literacy
This week in literacy we've continued to look at the friendly letter format. We've written an invitation to a party of sorts to send to a friend.
Math
This week in math, we've continued to look at different polygons and their properties. We did some polygon art to communicate our understandings of 2-D shapes.
Science
This week in science we've been looking at the design of boats and how their designs impact their ability to stay afloat. Using our knowledge of these boats, we set off to design, build, test and refine our own boats. Check out some of the work.
Physical Education
We've been having PhysEd outdoor this week due to the gym being used for the opera. This week we've been playing some challenging games of PillowPolo!
Literacy
This week in literacy we've been looking at writing friendly and persuasive letters. We wrote a friendly letter to our student teacher, Miss Donnelly who had her last day with us yesterday. Our persuasive letter was to Mr. Williams where we wrote to him trying to persuade him to build a hockey rink, a cafeteria or allow animals in school. We're still working on crafting these letters.
Math
This week in math, we've examined properties of different polygons, specifically the triangle, rectangle and square. We went on a shape hunt and did a "shape drawing" on the computer using Smart Notebook.
Science
This week in science we've looked at how the shape of an object can impact its buoyancy. We looked a ball of plasticine and experimented with how chaining its shape can make it buoyant.
Social Studies
Using our rubrics we created last week, we've examined how Rosemont School (as a public space). We've looked features of safety, beauty and accessibility in our school.
Opera
We've had many opera practices this week. The children have been working very hard!
Literacy
This week in Literacy, we've been looking at ways we communicate. We've discussed the postcard and it's use in history. We learned about postcards by reading the book Meerkat Mail . It was a great an interactive way to learn about Meerkats and their cousins, the mongoose.
This week, we've begun a read aloud chapter book, Stanley Goes to Space.
Math
This week in math we've begun our unit on geometry. Students have been investigating different type of polygons, and ways we sort polygons. We've looked at how we can classify shapes by the number of sides and corners (vertices).
Science
This week student explored how to make floating objects sink and vice versa, using what they learned about buoyant materials. Students had a challenge in getting quite a heavy metal knife to float in water. It was interesting to see and hear about their process of how to get the butter knife to float, as it was quite heavy. Ask them about it!
Social Studies
This week in Social we've been looking at the value of public spaces, and what makes a good public space. Together we've been creating a guide to public spaces and to help us evaluate them.
Below are screenshots of the evaluation we created.
We've also had some excitement with the Flames making it to the playoffs last night!! Good luck to the Flames!
Literacy
This week in literacy, we continued with word work and guided reading centers. Before the break, students were working on a retelling of traditional tales, such as: Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Boy Who Cried Wolf and The Three Little Pigs.
Math
This week we've continued to look at addition and subtraction skills, applied word problems and mental math skills.
Science
This week we started a new unit in Boats and Buoyancy. We explored putting different materials in water to see if it would float or sink. We also looked at putting bottles filled with air and water into water to see its effects.
Social
Mr. Careclakis met with Jody Danchuck from City Hall School to discuss how we'll be moving forward in teaching and learning to prepare for Open Minds.
Physical Education
We've had gym outside this week, as our gym is being used for Opera practices. This week we learned how to play kickball.
Opera News:
This week we've had some planning sessions around costumes and practiced with Ms. MacPhail.
