This week in literacy we've begun to examine what goes into non-fiction writing. This is a student-driven study, as they've asked to write about animals.
Together as a class we looked at a variety of books about different animals. We determined that the important information authors have included in their books are:
- appearance
- habitat
- diet
- information about their young & birthing
- fun facts and information
We then looked at how we could gather resources. Student's this week used their library time to take out books on their animals. These books will not be coming home, as we'll be using them at school each day.
We've also investigated looking at online resources. A great place to look for resources is at LearnAlberta.ca (username LA06 pass: 4105). Students can also look at resources there over the weekend.
Math
This week in math we've continued to look at 3D shapes. Students have been examining the properties of 3D shapes to look at faces and properties. We've also been describing, comparing and constructing a variety of 3D shapes.
Science
This week in Science we've been examining how the eye function to help us see shapes, sizes, colours and shades. We've looked at objects through magnifying glasses and what we can see using tools. We experimented with what happens when we have monocular vision (or being able to only see with one eye). Students did an experiment to see how their depth was impacted when they had only one eye to work with. We also looked at optical illusions and how what we perceive isn't always what is the case. Students experimented with this concept with creating a thaumatrope and we've started an art project that has an optical illusion in it!

This week in Social Studies we've begun to look at the early settlement of Nova Scotia, the Mi'kmak and the expulsion of the Acadians after the British invasion.
